Founded in 1916 by a small group of women headed by Mrs. Jacob M. (Hortense) Moses, the Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations of Maryland established a forum for communication between the many Jewish women's organizations in Maryland because "In Union There Is Strength." There were 29 constituent organizations as charter members of the Federation at its inception including the Baltimore Section, National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, Hebrew Ladies Orphan Aid Society, Daughters in Israel, Shearith Israel Congregation, Talmud Torah Society, and the Sisterhoods of several Baltimore congregations. The Federation has been involved in local, national, and international issues affecting Jews not only in Maryland, but in Germany, and Israel as well. It has run advocacy, leadership and educational programs for the local Jewish community, and the Federation often sends representatives to serve on city and state commissions and civic interest committees. The Federation has been associated with many of Baltimore's establishments, such as Sinai Hospital, Levindale, the Associated Jewish Charities of Baltimore, and the Jewish Historical Society of Maryland, assisting them with fundraising and other functions. The Federation today boasts at least 73 constituent organizations from Baltimore and Annapolis with a total membership that includes over 40,000 Jewish women of the Maryland.
